Generation talk with concentration camp survivor Helga Melmed and members of her family

5. Mai 2025, 19:00–21:00 Uhr

Ein älterer Mann steht vor einer langen Liste mit Namen der der Toten im Haus des Gedenkens in der KZ-Gedenkstätte Neuengamme.

Helga Melmed, née Arndtheim, was deported from Berlin to the Litzmannstadt/Lodz ghetto with her Jewish family at the age of 13. Her parents died there of hunger and disease. Helga Melmed survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, several satellite camps of the Neuengamme concentration camp and the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as the only member of her family. After the war she emigrated to the United States.

We will talk to Helga Melmed and her family members about the National Socialist persecution and about passing on the memory in their family. When did the children find out about their mother's persecution? Did the mother tell about her fate of her own accord? Did the children tell their own children about the family history? And what do all of them hope for the future?

The conversation will be held in English without translation.

Moderation: Ulrike Jensen (Concentration Camp Memorial Neuengamme)
